Forest Raised

Forest raised means exactly what it sounds like. Our hogs are rotated through the forest areas as they are harder on the land. Our chickens are also forest raised - we don't have any pasture land but to be honest, they love it. Chickens and hogs are naturally drawn to the woods as it provides many features for them like

  • Shelter and Protection: Trees and shrubs offer cover from predators (like hawks) and harsh weather. Chickens instinctively seek overhead protection.

  • Foraging Opportunities: Forest floors are full of insects, seeds, and plants that they love to scratch, rub and root around. It’s a forager’s paradise.

  • Shade and Comfort: Trees provide natural shade, helping chickens and pigs regulate their body temperature during hot weather.

  • Roosting Options: In the wild, jungle fowl (ancestors of domestic chickens) roost in trees. The forest gives them natural places to perch and sleep (they sleep in a coop during the night for their protection).

  • Mental Stimulation: Forested areas are full of variety—different textures, smells, and things to explore—which keeps chickens and pigs mentally active and reduces stress.

Danielle's Sourdough Goodies and Farm Made Products

Danielle bakes mostly using sourdough discard. Baking with sourdough discard offers a practical and time-efficient approach for our family with managing busy schedules, while still retaining many of the gut-friendly benefits associated with traditional sourdough.

Unlike conventional sourdough baking, which requires long fermentation times and frequent maintenance of a starter, baking with discard allows for quicker preparation without compromising the nutritional value entirely.
